The redevelopment of a Victorian walled garden into retirement apartments required a fitting landscape, one which respected the origins of the site, hold the memories of the retained walls and icehouse, while simultaneously providing a therapeutic landscape for the residents.
Integrating the retained walls into the new scheme and enlarging the theme of walls, a series of walled courtyards and gardens has been created to offer spaces for a variety of activities.
Those courtyards facing the wider parkland and the new housing development (outside our site) are left to open to increase the development’s connectivity and sense of inclusion in the wider community. The original icehouse can be accessed by the public and is set in a fitting designed landscape.
